Referencing Vedic and Puranic readings, Avatar offers renderings of the myriad manifestations of a supreme being through the vicissitudes of time and place. In contemporary times, the phenomenon of the Super Hero has catapulted, become universal and found new meaning in almost every aspect of popular culture. Within these works, there is a jostling of the old and the new, a deliberate hybridity, to extract the pulse of a universal consciousness in a globalizing world. As in content, the amalgamation is made apparent even in painterly practice. References from miniature paintings and Western Pop Art are juxtaposed, and the west and the east constantly collide. This churning gives way to a narrative that, at first, sparks a sense of measured disorientation which is steadily replaced by a sense of the familiar - a recognition that, what is inherently sought after is in fact universal.
