The term ‘skin deep’ implies a superficial reading of things, a hastily arrived at conclusion based upon a cursory examination of the surface, whereas, in actuality, the human skin is a complex web of interconnected cells that is metaphorically as layered as it is compositionally. This fragile yet resilient membrane serves both as a transmitter of external stimuli as well as a medium through which abstract notions of race, identity, beauty, gender, desire and power, to name only a few, are constructed and deconstructed. While the proposed exhibition seeks to encourage further dialogue on the subject of the skin and its role in shaping socio-cultural thought and practice, it seeks to do so through an examination of the medium’s formal structure, its texture, its composition and its function as the definitive divide between the corporeal internal world and the physical outer world
